Definition
Rickets is a type of disease which is caused by the lack of mainly for vitamin D, calcium and phosphate. This rickets weakens and softens the bones. Vitamin D helps to absorb calcium, phosphorus to your body. When you are affected by rickets, your body can't absorb calcium or phosphorus. When it occurs, your body produces hormones that release from your bones. 6-36 months of children are most common to be affected by this disease. It usually happens in children because they can't get much amount of vitamin D. Also, the cause may include: living at those areas which don't have or have a little amount of sun light, not getting milk etc.
Causes
Vitamin D is needed in your child's body to absorb calcium and phosphorus which are got from food.Vitamin D and calcium is the main reason for the rickets. A great source of Vitamin D is sunlight. Sunlight can give us a huge amount of Vitamin D. Also some foods contain this vitamin. Rickets occurs when your child can't absorb or consume enough vitamin D from foods. It can also occur if your child has difficulty or problem to use Vitamin D. Actually not having enough vitamin D or calcium causes rickets. This disease can also be inherited from parents.
Symptoms
The symptoms of rickets usually appear in the beginning stages. The infants are more affected by this disease. Their skulls may feel softer than previous or usual. Symptoms of rickets include:
- Having difficulty in walking and running
- Pain in affected bones
- Spine curved abnormally
- Large forehead
- Abnormal rib shape
- Weakness in bones
- Some teeth problem such as: holes seen in enamel, tooth structure defect etc.
- Abnormally shaped skull
- Slow growth rate
Treatment
The best way to treat rickets is to eat those foods which are rich in Vitamin D. The treatment of rickets is primarily focused on filling the lack of Vitamin D or mineral in your child's body. If your children has a lack of Vitamin D, consult with a doctor. First, he may examine your child via X-ray and blood test. He may suggest you to keep your child to sun exposure if it is possible for you. He may also recommend some foods which may include: liver, milk, eggs etc. Actually, rickets can be treated by taking enough Vitamin D and calcium containing foods for most of the children. But you have to remember that over Vitamin D is harmful for your child. Some supplements and medications also play a great role for the treatment of rickets.
Prevention
Exposure to sun rays is the best source of vitamin D. If you come to the exposure of sun rays for 10-15 minutes in most seasons, that is enough for you. It is also important to eat vitamin D rich foods. Make sure that your child gets enough amount of vitamin D foods. The foods may include: bread, cereal, milk. Notice that you eat milk not those foods made from milk.
