Definition
Eating disorder is a kind of mental disorder. This is a type of disorder where unhealthy food habit is developed. Eating disorder is a serious condition which impacts negatively in all areas of your life. For example: Your health, emotion, functionality. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder are the most common types of eating disorder. This disorder may start with body weight, foods etc. The unhealthy eating habits of this disorder include: eating too much or very little or worrying for your body weight. Mostly, 13 to 17 years teen are affected by it. But anyone can be attacked. This disorder appears fatal often.
Types
There are some types of eating disorder. These types include:
- Anorexia nervosa
- Purging disorder
- Binge eating disorder
- Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
- Night eating syndrome
- Pica
- Bulimia nervosa
- Rumination disorder
Symptoms
Different types of eating disorder have different symptoms. Some condition focuses on food or eating whether some on weight.
The symptoms of most common eating disorder types are given below:
Anorexia nervosa:
- Extreme thinness
- A weight gaining fear
- Restricted eating
- Distortion of body image
- Sore throat
- Imbalance of electrolyte
- Severe dehydration
- Other problems of gastrointestinal besides acid reflux disorder
- Tooth enamel increasingly sensitive
- Worn tooth enamel
- Intestinal irritation and distres
Binge-eating disorder:
- Fast eating
- Continuing eating until your full uncomfortably
- Unusually consuming huge amount of food
- Consuming food when you don't have any hungry
- Eating in alone
Causes
One of the causes of eating disorder is personality traits. Three personality traits which play role in this case are: neuroticism, perfectionism, impulsivity. If anyone has these three personality traits, he is at a high risk of getting attacked by eating disorder. Pressure of being thin also play a great role in eating disorder. Genetically a person can develop eating disorder. A person who has a sibling or parent with eating disorder, develop a higher risk to be attacked by eating disorder.
Prevention
In fact, there is no absolute way to prevent this eating disorder. Some steps may play a vital role in your child's life as this attacks mostly the teenagers. Firstly, your child may develop any misconception about eating disorder. So, correct his wrong. Then the next step is that avoid your child from diet. Teach your child to choose healthy balanced eating rather than diet. Because your child's health condition may decrease by dieting. Keep consulting your doctor. If you keep consultation with your child's doctor, he may be able to recognize the problem of your child. He may ask your child some questions. He may also give him checks.
Treatment
Treatment for eating disorder varies based on each person which may include some therapies. Some other treatment are also helpful. A kind of psychotherapy called Cognitive behavioral therapy is a recommendation for this disorder. Doctor may prescribe some medicine including these: antidepressants, antipsychotics, or mood stabilizers. Nutritional counseling is another item for treatment. The nutritional counseling means that a person has to work with a dietitian for learning about proper eating habits and nutrition. Also, it may include to manage a person's weight if a great weight change has been noticed by him.
