Definition

Asthma is a long term common lung condition which affects your lungs. People of all ages are affected by it. It usually begins at childhood. But it can also develop at the first stage of adults. It narrows your airways. That’s why you have difficulty in breathing. Sounds can also be heard while breathing.

Symptoms

Asthma has many symptoms. Some of they are:

  • Coughing (Especially at night)
  • Shortage of breath
  • A sound of whistling during breathing
  • Tight chest
  • Feeling very tired while exercising
  • Trouble sleeping

Without these symptoms children develop some other symptoms also. Most of the children get attacked by asthma at the age of 5. Asthma can begin at any age. Chronic coughing with asthma may the symptom. Not all children have the problem of wheezing.

There are some unusual symptoms also. They include rapid breathing, having not the inability to exercise properly, anxiety, wheezing less chronic cough.

Types

Professionals divide asthma into two main parts based on the cause and dangerousness of the symptoms:

  • Intermittent: This kind of asthma appears and disappears. That’ why you may feel normal and easy.

  • Persistent: When you are attacked by this type of asthma, you have symptoms most of the time. Your symptoms may appear as different looks. It may be minor, moderate and dangerous.

There are also some other types of asthma. They are:

  • Adult-onset: This begins at the age of 18.

  • Pediatric: Its’ another name is childhood asthma. This type appears before the age of 5. It can attack the infants. It can increase. So, when your child has this, consult with a professional.

  • Exercise-included asthma: Exercise sets off this kind of asthma.

  • Occupational asthma: This type attacks basically those people who work with irritating matters or substances.

  • Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS): This type can be seen when you are attacked by both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Both accelerate difficult of breathing.

Causes

It is not known why some people develop asthma while other don’t. But there are some factors to consider as cause:

  • Having airborne allergies
  • Cold air, smoke and pollution
  • Family history
  • Respiratory infections
  • Food allergies

Treatment

You have options to manage your asthma. By which you can keep your asthma under control. Bronchodilators, these medicines help to widen the narrow breathing way. Thus you can breathe properly. Anti-inflammatory medicines make it easier for air to enter and exit of your lung. Inhalers can also be helpful. You can use different types of inhalers. Like preventer inhaler, reliever inhaler, combination inhaler. You may also need to use tablets. Injections, therapies, surgeries are also additional helpful stuffs in this case.

Prevention

Actually there is no way to prevent asthma. But an asthma attack can be prevented. Follow the detailed plan provided by your doctor or healthcare team. If you have influenza and pneumonia, then you need to be vaccinated. You also have to identify your asthma triggers, and keep away from them. Consult with your doctor if you have or feel more difficult than previous. Don’t forget to use medicines which have been provided by your doctor. Your condition may improve. But never leave taking medicines without talking with your doctor.
